What Is Power Flushing?
Over time, the water inside your central heating system reacts with steel radiators and pipework, producing black iron oxide sludge. This sludge builds up, restricting flow and causing cold spots on radiators, noisy boilers and premature pump failure. Power flushing is the process of forcing clean water and cleaning chemicals through the system to clear it out.
Signs Your System Needs a Flush
Not every home needs a power flush, but these are the classic warning signs:
- Radiators that are cold at the bottom or middle but hot at the top.
- Discoloured, brown or black water when you bleed a radiator.
- A noisy boiler or radiators that take a long time to heat up.
- Frequent pump failures or repeated blocked valves.
- Some radiators warming up noticeably later than others.
How It Works
We connect a powerful flushing machine to your system — usually at the radiator or pump — and pump a combination of fresh water, a sludge-cracking chemical and a descaler through every pipe and radiator. Magnets capture the iron oxide, and we balance each radiator so the heat distributes evenly. Finally, we add a corrosion inhibitor to protect the system going forward.
Is It Worth It?
If your system is heavily sludged, a power flush can dramatically improve warmth and efficiency — and it's far cheaper than replacing a boiler wrecked by sludge. However, if your radiators and pipework are very old and corroded, a flush can sometimes expose leaks, so we'll always advise you honestly before going ahead.
