Choosing the Right Boiler Type
When it's time to replace your boiler, one of the biggest decisions is which type to go for. The right choice depends on your home size, the number of bathrooms, and your hot water demand. Here's a plain-English breakdown of the three main types.
Combi Boilers
A combi (combination) boiler heats hot water on demand directly from the mains, so there's no need for a cold water tank or hot water cylinder. They're compact, efficient, and ideal for smaller homes and flats with one bathroom. The downside? If two people run hot taps at once, the flow can drop.
System Boilers
System boilers take water directly from the mains but store hot water in a cylinder — usually in an airing cupboard. They're great for homes with multiple bathrooms, as they can deliver hot water to several taps at the same time at good pressure. You don't need a cold water tank in the loft.
Regular (Heat-Only) Boilers
Regular boilers work with a hot water cylinder and a cold water storage tank in the loft. They suit larger homes with traditional open-vented systems and high hot water demand. If you're replacing an old regular boiler, a like-for-like swap is often the most straightforward route.
Which Should You Choose?
As a rough guide: a combi is best for smaller homes with one bathroom; a system boiler suits family homes with two or more bathrooms; and a regular boiler makes sense if you already have a cylinder and loft tank and want a straightforward replacement.
